Hookah pipes, also referred to as a water pipe, is a glass based instrument which is used for smoking mixes of tobacco. It is either single or multi stemmed and features large bases which are partially filled with water. The device is popular in Middle East, the United States, Great Britain, and Australia and they can be traced all the way back to the early fifteen hundreds. Though smoking hookah pipes is considered long standing and historical traditions, they are growing popular among grad schools and colleges.

The devices can be traced back for hundreds of years to Northern India and were invented reportedly by a professional physician from Iran. After explorers from Europe introduced tobacco to the country Abu’l-Fath Gilani, the physician, began to worry that the method of smoking it wasn’t exactly pure so he envisioned elaborate devices which would allow noblemen to smoke through water so it was purified by it. He designed the contraption, which became extremely popular among aristocrats and gentry who considered the new method to be a major status symbol.

Throughout the Arab world, smoking with hookahs is a major part of the tradition and culture. Social smoking is a popular hobby in which people, whether they’re attending a party or other social gathering, share the prepared tobacco together via one of the hookah’s hoses until it all runs out. If a single stemmed device is used the participants use personal mouthpieces when it is their turn to prevent the inevitable sharing of germs.

The hookahs are very popular throughout America and began in the seventies and sixties where they were used as ways to enjoy flavored tobaccos. Their intense popularity is still quite steady due mostly to the implementation of strict smoking laws in many parts of the country.

Hookah bars, places where patrons get together to smoke, are exempt from these recent and strict laws due to special loophole permits which they are eligible for. The bars are particularly well known throughout American university campuses and are popular for their big menus of tobacco varieties and relaxing atmospheres.

The device consists of numerous essential and unique components such as bowls, wind screens, purge valves, and hoses. The bowl, also called a head, is made typically out of clay or ceramic and sits atop the hookah. It is responsible for the holding of the tobacco during sessions and occasionally feature small wind screens made from aluminum that keep the tobacco free from any debris.

The hoses are long and flexible parts which attach to the hookah’s base. They let the user suck out the smoke from a comfortable distance, generally two to four feet, and make sure that the warm smoke is cooled down enough prior to reaching their lips. The base or water jar of the instrument is the biggest and most noticeable part of the item. It contains the necessary fluid, which the smoke is filtered through before going through the hoses.

Many, particularly newer ones, also come with small purge valves that sit on the side the water jar and are used to purge used air from the compartment.
